Total Bilirubin (TBIL) is a blood biomarker that measures the total amount of bilirubin in the bloodstream, including both direct (conjugated) and indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin. Bilirubin is a yellow compound that occurs in the normal catabolic pathway that breaks down heme in red blood cells. It is processed in the liver, where it is conjugated and excreted in bile. Clinically, TBIL is an important marker for liver function and can indicate liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and bile duct obstruction. Elevated TBIL levels may also reflect hemolytic anemia or other conditions causing increased red blood cell breakdown.
