It acts as a cofactor in one-carbon metabolism, facilitating the transfer of methyl groups necessary for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Folate is obtained from dietary sources and synthesized by gut microbiota, with absorption occurring in the small intestine. Deficiency in folate can lead to megaloblastic anemia and has been associated with neural tube defects in developing embryos.
