IL-6 is a key mediator in the acute phase response, stimulating the production of acute-phase proteins such as C-reactive protein (CRP) in the liver. Clinically, IL-6 is a significant biomarker for inflammatory conditions and has been implicated in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and cardiogenic shock. Elevated IL-6 levels are associated with increased risk of atherothrombotic events and poor outcomes in conditions like acute myocardial infarction and heart failure.
